Below is the text of Mr Major’s written Parliamentary Answer on Housing Benefit on 4th July 1986.
Mr. Pike Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people in Burnley at the latest date for which figures are available were receiving (a) rate rebates, (b) rent rebates and (c) rent allowances; and how many of these are certificated claims.
Mr. Major On the basis of information from Burnley borough council’s latest subsidy claim it is estimated that the average number of people in receipt of rate rebate, rent rebate and rent allowance is:
Rent Rebate | Rent Allowance | Rate rebate
Certificated | 2,930 | 1,050 | 6,260
Standard | 2,330 | 570 | 4,640
Total | 5,260 | 1,620 | 10,900
