Mr Major’s Written Parliamentary Answer on Severe Weather Payments – 13 January 1987

Below is the text of Mr Major’s written Parliamentary Answer on Severe Weather Payments on 13th January 1987.

Mr. Kennedy Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the operation of the revised system of exceptionally severe weather payments.

Mr. Haynes Asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what further information he has received about the operation of the severe weather payments scheme.

Mr. Major The arrangement with the Meteorological Office is for information on temperatures recorded at designated weather stations over a fixed seven-day period to be received by the Department on the following Tuesday. One weather station, Eskdalemuir, recorded an average weekly temperature below minus 1.5 deg. C. in the week ending 11 January, and arrangements are in hand to publicise the availability of these payments in the area which is covered by the Galashiels local office.
