The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1991Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Comments on Iraq – 16 March 1991

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments made regarding on Iraq on Saturday 16th March 1991 in Bermuda.

QUESTION:

[Mr Major was asked about the ceasefire resolution].

PRIME MINISTER:

A number of other people, of course, will need to be consulted, will need to be concerned about it, but we think it will cover a number of things. It will cover, for example, an arms embargo to Iraq; it will probably cover the destruction of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons that Iraq has; it will certainly cover the release of Kuwaiti detainees; and I suspect it may well also cover hypothecation of oil revenues in order to meet reparations.

Those are the sort of things that I would expect to be in the resolution, but there will be more than that, it will be a lengthy resolution.

QUESTION:

[Mr Major was asked how such an agreement would be enforced].

PRIME MINISTER:

It will be part of the ceasefire resolution, it will be a United Nations resolution. There will be sanctions imposed if it isn’t honoured.
