Mr Major’s Comments on John Redwood Standing in the Leadership Election – 26 June 1995

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on John Redwood standing in the Conservative leadership election. The comments were made at Cannes on 26th June 1995.

QUESTION:

[Mr Major was asked for his reaction to the news that John Redwood was standing]

PRIME MINISTER:

Well, John has sat in the Cabinet for the last two or three years, he knows what our policies are, he sat there accepting our policies throughout that time. Just a fortnight ago or so he was part of a policy making Cabinet, he and I have discussed policy on many occasions, he has put policy suggestions into our study groups, all of which are being considered, so it’s rather surprising suddenly he should taken a different position to the rest of the Cabinet.
