Mr Major’s Comments on Manchester Olympics Bid – 3 July 1992

Below is the text of Mr Major’s comments on the Manchester Olympics bid, made on 3rd July 1992, but embargoed until 18th July 1992.

PRIME MINISTER:

Manchester led the world into this century with its industrial strengths and innovation. Now it can lead the world into the next century through its commitment to the Olympic ideals. Sport enriches our lives, yours, mine, everyones. I believe that hosting the Olympic Games would not only be a magnificent honour for our country, it will also leave a precious legacy of sport for generations to come.

That is why the government has already given 53 million pounds for the immediate construction of new sports facilities in Manchester. If Manchester is successful, I have every confidence that a combination of public and private finance will ensure that the facilities for the Games are provided.
