The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1995Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Doorstep Comments Outside Papworth Hospital – 28 April 1995

Below is the summary of Mr Major’s doorstep comments outside Papworth Hospital, made on 28th April 1995.

PRIME MINISTER:

The Prime Minister spoke to reporters on leaving Papworth Hospital.

He talked about:

– Papworth Hospital

– Attractive to see the Labour Party entering the second half of the twentieth century. Very few people regard Clause 4 as a serious issue. Nationalisation is not the way forward. It has taken the Labour Party long enough to realise it.

– There has been too much emphasis on side issues. I hope we will see more focus on the real issues soon. But we must never take the electorate for granted.

– I would be surprised if they decide to strike, their reputation is such that it would be most unlikely. They were given their own independent review body to look at pay and the Government has met its recommendations in full.
