Below, in abbreviated form, is Mr Major’s doorstep interview in Cumbria on 27th October 1995.
[Asked about President Yeltsin]
Very sorry he is ill and wish him a full and speedy recovery.
He has made a remarkable contribution to democracy, not only in Russia but in the rest of the world.
[Asked about the Conservative Party and family values]
We have always been, and will always be, the party of the family.
The Family Homes and Domestic Violence Bill was introduced as a non-controversial bill. It implemented the recommendations of the Law Commission. It passed through the House of Commons and the House of Lords and no objections were raised.
My party believes in the institution of marriage. It is only right to examine the concerns which have now been expressed.
[Asked about divorce]
Wait for the Queen’s Speech.
