The Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH

Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1990-1997

1993Prime Minister (1990-1997)

Mr Major’s Public Message to President Yeltsin – 22 September 1993

Below is the text of Mr Major’s public message to President Yeltsin, issued on 22nd September 1993.

PRIME MINISTER:

I heard of the latest developments in Russia soon after my arrival in Kuala Lumpur, and have been following events as closely as I can from here. I am sorry that, because of my programme here, I have not so far had a chance to speak to you on the telephone.

When we met in Tokyo two months ago, you explained your intention to bring in a new, democratic constitution following the strong backing you received in the April referendum. In calling for elections this December to a new Parliament, you are giving them the chance to have their views properly represented. This is what they voted for in the April referendum. This deserves the backing of democrats, both inside the outside Russia. I would like to assure you of our full support for your determined and courageous efforts, in the face of great difficulties, to surmount the challenges to your reform programme, and to create a democratic framework for Russia and the Russian people.
