1995Prime Minister (1990-1997)

PMQT Written Answers – 18 January 1995

Below is the text of the written answers relating to Prime Minister’s Question Time from 18th January 1995.

PRIME MINISTER:

Civil Servants

Mr. Byers: To ask the Prime Minister how many staff in his Office have reported an offer of employment from an outside employer since February 1993 as required under the civil service management code; and how many of those reports were followed by an application to join the company concerned.

The Prime Minister: Since February 1993, there have not been any applications for staff in my Office to join outside employers.

Cyprus

Mr. Cox: To ask the Prime Minister if he will make a statement on the Government’s view of the report by Lord Finsberg on Cyprus to be discussed at the Council of Europe meeting in Strasbourg on 2 February.

The Prime Minister: Lord Finsberg’s report on the situation in Cyprus has been prepared in his capacity as rapporteur of the political committee of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe. As such, it would not be proper for Her Majesty’s Government to comment on the judgements made in the report. We share Lord Finsberg’s desire to see continuing efforts to resolve the Cyprus dispute on the basis of UN resolutions, most recently UN Security Council resolution 939 of 29 July 1994.

Brendan Smyth

Mr. Madden: To ask the Prime Minister what representations he made to Ministers or officials of the then Irish Government over delays in the extradition from the Irish Republic of Brendan Smyth.

The Prime Minister: None.

Modbury Team Ministry

Mr. Steen: To ask the Prime Minister what are the reasons for the delay in Privy Council approval for the Modbury team ministry within the Exeter diocese; and when a decision will be reached.

Mr. Alison: I have been asked to reply.

The matter is not yet with the Privy Council. The position is that the Church Commissioners have recently considered three representations against a draft Pastoral Scheme providing, inter alia, for the creation of the Modbury team ministry. The Commissioners’ conclusions have now been shared with the Diocesan Bishop and their decision is expected to be announced shortly.
