Sir John Major’s Comments at the Funeral of Lord Newton of Braintree – 12 April 2012

The text of Sir John Major’s comments made at the funeral of Lord Newton of Braintree (Tony Newton, former Leader of the House of Commons and Secretary of State for Social Security) on 12th April 2012 in Coggeshall, Essex.

SIR JOHN MAJOR:

I don’t think there’s anywhere else I’d have wished to be today, nor many other people I saw in the church. Tony was a very special person, so I very much wished to be here.

INTERVIEWER:

[Sir John was asked how he would remember Lord Newton]

SIR JOHN MAJOR:

With very great affection, we worked together for a long time and we had a lot of fun together, people forget that. In politics you form very close alliances with some people, we worked together in departments, we worked together across departments and I’ve so many memories of working with him.
