Mr. Patrick Thompson To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the percentage increase in 1987 in the net real rate of return for non-North sea industrial and commercial companies.

Mr. Major The net real rate of return for non-North sea industrial and commercial companies rose a further 15 per cent. in 1987 to reach 10.2 per cent., its highest level for 18 years.
